A made in France Breton shirt, from knit to seam
La Marinière 1858 is knitted and then sewn in Troyes, in the Troyes Champagne textile region. Its name recalls 1858, the year the striped shirt became part of the French sailors' uniform.
Its 100% carded cotton jersey, 220 g/m² in the long-sleeve version, holds its shape from the very first wear and softens beautifully over time.
Made in France you can verify: the France Terre Textile label
"Made in France" on a label only means that the last substantial transformation took place in France. The France Terre Textile label goes further: it guarantees that at least 69% of the manufacturing steps are carried out in France, in approved textile regions, with regular audits and traceability checks. Every Marinière 1858 carries it.
To see what each mention actually guarantees, read our guide to made in France labels.
Gauvain Paris is listed on Le Site du Made in France for its Marinière 1858.
Made in France Breton shirt for men and women
La Marinière 1858 comes as a women's made in France Breton shirt and a men's made in France Breton shirt. It is the same garment: the women's size is simply labelled one size up from the men's.
Take your usual size. If in doubt, measure your chest and check the women's size guide or the men's size guide.
The Breton shirt, made in Troyes
The Breton shirt owes its name to the ports of Brittany, where it was born. France's great knitting mills, however, have been in Troyes for centuries: that is where we make ours.
Our other model, La Marinière Originale in combed cotton, is made in Portugal. You will find it with the full collection in our Breton shirts.
